Earlier, I was receiving mails with unknown extensions and was reluctant to open the attachments because of virus threats. I recently bought WinFirewall. It now provides me with a list of extensions from which I can choose to allow or block mails that enter my mailbox. With WinFirewall, I feel reinforced that no hazardous mails will ever enter my system.

Yahoo Messenger has become one of the first targets for hackers trying to steal some vulnerable private information from unsuspected users. The first phishing attack on Yahoo Messenger tries to trick users into giving up information that would enable the attackers to access their accounts.
Usually, Yahoo Messenger users get a link to fake Yahoo site, which looks exactly the same as the real one. The site asks them to login using their Yahoo username and password. This phishing attack comes by way of unsolicited IM addresses though the next time phishing attacks could use existing buddy lists. Phillip Patterson, WinSoftware Senior Security Expert, says: “this year we’re facing the unexpectedly high growth in IM worms and attacks, organizations can no longer afford to leave their IM users unprotected and unmanaged. ”
It’s worth to mention that other messaging clients are also the target for attacks, though not phishing scams. Earlier this year Microsoft’s MSN Messanger was hit with a series of rapidly developing worms caller “Kelvir”.
The bounds of damage cannot be yet estimated, though experts say that the damage is supposed to be limited since only Yahoo Messenger was attacked. «« hide details

WinSoftware security experts report to have discovered a new Trojan horse, Troj/LegMir-Y, which steals usernames and passwords from players of the famous multi player fantasy role-playing game "Lineage". show more »»
The game "Lineage" is very popular with computer users and is played by many over the Internet. It is an adaptation from the comic book series by Shin I1-sook and is about a prince who tries to win back his rightful throne. With millions of subscribers all over the world, "Lineage" is particularly a hot favorite in South Korea owing to the country's advanced internet infrastructure. Players of the game are known to be staying absorbed in its virtual world for hours and hours together.
"Virus analysts in our research lab have been coming up with discoveries every now and then of malware prying on game subscribers' login information, registration keys and other important data", noted Phillip Patterson, WinSoftware's Senior Security Expert. He continues, "Rivalry among internet gamers has attained such destructive heights that they have no qualms about compromising with their ethical values. The mere goal of getting the better of their rival players over the internet prompts them to go ahead with offhand acts of stealing their rivals' authentication details. Going by the rising figures of such crimes, it can be concluded that future will witness many such instances of internet theft.
"The LegMir-Y Trojan horse also tries to switch off antivirus software and other security solutions, thus creating a backdoor for hacker attacks. Other prominent multi player internet games to have been attacked by viruses and Trojan horses include "Outwar" and "Legend of Mir 2". There have been reports of a British youth being handed a six month sentence for playing a major role in circulating the Randex worm with the purpose of gaining an advantageous position in the "Outwar" game.
WinSoftware recommends its users to maintain their antivirus solutions up-to date. Comprehensive protection can be availed with WinAntiVirus Pro, which will shield computers against spyware and popup window threats.

Technical experts at WinSoftware have reported a new worm, W32/Cellery-A, which appears to a computer user as a playable version of the popular Russian game Tetris, while it stealthily moves to computers across networks. After gaining entry into a computer, it makes changes to Windows settings so as to run automatically when the operating system loads. The Cellery worm derives its name from the message "Chancellery" that it displays on computer screens show more »»
The Tetris like game, when active, plays a MIDI music tune and hunts for possible network drives and connected computers it can spread itself to. Reports say that the Cellery worm is not the first of its kind with there already having been instances in the past of virus or worm letting infected PC users play games. The Bibrog worm pretended as a shooting game while the Coconut worm (written by Gigabyte, the famous Belgian virus writer) let the users hurl coconuts at the snaps of members of the computer security community.
Commenting on the characteristics of the worm, Phillip Patterson, the senior security analyst for WinSoftware said, "The Cellery worm disguises itself under the Tetris like game it makes available for the infected user to play. On the face of it the user thinks he is playing the interesting game, while underneath the worm circulates itself to all computers it can establish connection with. The proven method of staying away from the worm is to maintain an up-to-date antivirus solution. Latest signatures will also defend computers from the several thousand viruses discovered every month."
Though not many reports have come in for the Cellery worm, yet WinSoftware experts advise computer users to update their antivirus solutions. Those users that do not have a reliable antivirus program on their computers are strongly recommended to install it on a nearest opportunity. Visit WinAntiVirus site to find out more. «« hide details
